The Castles of Ireland: Ashford Castle

While most castles call to mind visions of luxurious suites, an impeccably dressed staff ready to serve your every whim, and lush, evergreen gardens, few actually deliver these amenities—at least not to the public. Ashford Castle, western Ireland’s five-star luxury resort, offers all of this along with the charm of a castle that is close to 800 years old. Read on to learn more and plan your stay.

History:
Built in the 13th century by an Anglo-Norman family, the castle has been home to a number of loving stewards. Throughout the years, various buildings—including a French-style chateau—as well as acreage have been added to the property. During the mid 1800s, it was home to the Guinness family who restored its west wing and curated its garden and woodlands. In 1939, Noel Huggard purchased the property and transformed the castle in a luxury hotel. Since that time, several owners have maintained the presence and grandeur of Ashford Castle as a world-class escape—as evidenced by its numerous and prestigious awards. Since 2013 Red Carnation Hotels has been the proprietor, and they continue to restore the palace to its glory today.

The Grounds:
Ashford Castle features a number of gardens for guests to explore, included what is known as the formal Main Parterre, the Walled Garden, and the Terraced Walk. Additionally, a large circular fountain is a scenic draw for guests. There are also 350 acres of Irish woodland that surround the castle grounds.

  2. My husband and I got lost in the woodlands at Ashford Castle. I used my training in Girl Scouts to “find the water”. We still laugh about it and have fond memories of our stay at Ashford Castle

  3. I learned about this Castle thru Nora Roberts, who used the setting in one of her trilogies and thru her newsletter. I definitely want to visit this place. I was in Ireland a few years ago and would love to go back.

  4. I had the tremendous pleasure of staying at Ashford Castle, several years ago. It was an experience I shall never forget. We spent much time exploring the many ancient aspects of the castle. Since we were there in November, the firesides were glowing and my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed sipping a cocktail, or tasting the delightful offerings at teatime, while surrounded by the homey scent of peat emanating from one of the magnificent fireplaces. I would highly recommend a stay at Ashford to anyone visiting that area of Ireland.

  5. Beautiful castle, and so pleased that it has been in use, rather than falling down. I love these notes you give. I am hoping to visit this castle next year.

  6. I stayed at Ashford Castle as a teenager in 1966 and I still remember it well . It is such a beautiful place thank you for reminding me of that time and that I need to go back . Been to Ireland 6 times but it’s been 20 yrs since I’ve visited.

  7. To those who love the movie “The Quiet Man”, there were several scenes shot around the castle grounds. (the bridge where Rev. Mr. Playfair and the bishop were watching the fight between Sean Thorton and the Squire, among several of the scenes) Magnificent is an understatement.
